Day 307: How to get killed by a plate vibrator

It sounds more exciting than it should. Thursday 7am I set off with the school car – that is literally a safety hazard with the third and 4th and 5th gear being ragged…- and I drive off to JM Trykluft in the Horsens’ industrial zone. In mind: plate vibrator. It is indeed time to start inside the house, and after spending one afternoon setting levels with Yoanna which was really tough considering her height ^^ -sorry I get distracted in details- and another half day spreading gravel here and there because of a “more or less” of last summer when Janis in a hurry gave me the level of the insulation instead of the level of the gravel which lead me to assigning 7 volunteers pouring gravel for over an hour until I realized the mistake and stopped the procession if I may call it so and decided it was pointless to correct said mistake seeing that we would keep stepping everywhere and moving gravel. Sometimes mistakes, no, every time, they come and hunt you later, and so today was later and half a day here and there just to prepare for the plate vibrator.

307

Anyways, back at JM Trykluft, I pick up the plate vibrator, the guy explains to me quickly how to start the machine and I set off into the rising sun towards the house. I’m full speed trying to get up a hill and thinking that I could actually make the light but then, bam, light turns red and I hit the brakes hard – the car not being very reliable on the breaks either – when I hear metal vs metal scratching sound. It took me half a second to realize what was happening, close my eyes make a decision on whether I wanted to be crushed by the plate vibrator sliding uncontrollably behind me or not stop at the line and risk being in the middle of the crossing lane. I must admit there was a little prayer in it as well. Conflicted between braking the car or braking the plate vibrator, both resulting in injuries on my person, I was relieved when I managed to stop slightly before the intersection and hear a little clunk between the plate vibrator and the back of my seat.  My life is so exciting! ^^

Once on site Andreea is willing to work the machine, but just after we start it, the engine stops, we couldn’t get it to start again, the plate would do a kick start end just kill the engine slowly. After internet failed me I had resort to calling the company to get an explanation, felling silly. It turns out I had forgotten to open the gas, stupid, right?

The first rounds trigger an uprising of dust of another world and it becomes quickly unbreathable in the house, but Andreea stays put. After 15 min ride she stops, and we assess the damage. I place the strings, running on the floor like lasers from those alarms like we see in the movies, and start shoveling here and there to compensate over 7cm at some spots. Another 30min runs and another problem rises. Remember at the beginning of the construction, there were two “island” in the middle of the house, one in the back room and one in the buffer zone. Well on top of those went geotextile then we added some gravel on top of those islands and then geotextile/DPM/geotextile. Well turns out that level was now our highest point in the building. Meaning we had a lot gravel to compensate on the sides and particularly in the buffer. Second issue was that there is over 50cm of gravel and since we didn’t compact as we went it became mission impossible to actually compact the entire thickness with the plate vibrator. 2h more of plate vibrating I decided that it would no longer compact and just stop our trouble there. Time to see how to level minimum 1cm to maximum 7cm. Gravel too big and we would have to compact it again, so I going to do a try out with a bucket of sand in on of the corners, see how easy it isto spread and level. The rest we will see tomorrow.

Of course the matter of placing the plate vibrator from the car to the house and vice versa was a whole other story in itself. Keep in mind that the machine is over 70kg or something like that and with only three girls on site…

Thanks for following :)
